About April Mandeville-Palm, LCSW

Welcome to a space dedicated to understanding, growth, and peace. Discover my passion for social work and how I strive to support individuals, couples and families through life's transitions individually and group centered.

My journey to social work

My path to becoming a social worker is rooted in a profound desire to assist people. Been in the field for 20+ years in various roles, from community to private to organizational, in outpatient therapy. I find immense satisfaction in working with the aging population, particularly through group settings where shared experiences can foster healing and connection, providing opportunities to increase socialization and support. This dedication stems from a belief in the inherent strength of every individual and the power of community.

Outside of my professional work, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets, engaging in crafting projects, being outdoors, and continuously pursuing knowledge and education.

A compassionate approach to healing

My unique way of helping clients is centered on meeting them where they are, from a strength's perspective. This means focusing on your existing capabilities and resilience, rather than solely on challenges. Exploring service goals and providing accountability. I believe that by building upon your strengths, we can navigate difficulties more effectively and achieve lasting well-being.

Supporting you through life's challenges

I most enjoy working with individuals facing chronic physical and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and significant life transitions or adjustments. My expertise lies in helping you overcome these challenges by providing tailored support and strategies that promote stability and enhance your quality of life. Together, we can find paths to greater peace and empowerment.

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy

Through my teaching, I strive to create an inclusive and reflective classroom environment. Encouraging students to examine their own positionalities and challenge dominant narratives through interactive methods, such as group work and the integration of activities that interest them. I recognize that there are multiple perspectives and that solutions are rarely one-dimensional. Education, in my view, serves as a platform to promote awareness, strengthen understanding, and increase access to resources for the populations we serve through building strong relationships. By building strong relationships with students, I can tailor lessons to meet them where they are on their educational journey. I find that when teaching, the more a student can own what they are working on, the more motivated they are to follow through and empowered to shape their own stories.

I believe that as a teacher, it is important to take the time to get to know each individual student who is in your class and how they best learn, what their individual goals are from participating in the class, or what objectives they are seeking to accomplish within the discipline. My hope is to help students find their passion in the field and provide the tools to pursue it and succeed.

Providing tools that are effective and relevant, that are tailored to their areas of interest, is another way to positively impact their motivation.  I aim to model the importance of lifelong, transformational learning, which fosters critical thinking. My teaching uses various modalities, including lectures, classroom discussions, hands-on activities, readings, and group work. Interacting with students by showing visibility in the classroom, engaging with them as they work, and demonstrating genuine curiosity about their perspectives. wandering while they are reading or working on activities throughout the lesson. Showing curiosity about their perspectives while engaging them by challenging their own thinking prompts elaboration on their rationale or viewing through a different lens, deepening understanding.

Part of being a teacher is continuous learning and openness with students. Throughout your educational journey, I hope there is one teacher or professor who can relate to you and make you feel supported, which can be invaluable. My hope is to be that anchor for my students as I learn and grow in my teaching journey with them. Showing flexibility in expectations, yet establishing boundaries, displaying respect, while gaining it from the students at the same time.

Diversity Statement

As a social worker, I recognize the importance of creating meaningful change within diverse communities. Ensuring that I approach each individual with genuine understanding and respect. Deciding to start therapy, especially when you are not feeling like yourself, can be challenging. It's natural to question whether therapy is the right fit or worry if the clinician will truly understand you. My commitment is to meet you wherever you are, offering unconditional support and partnering with you to explore life’s journey openly in a safe and welcoming environment. My hope is that through our work together, you will discover a sense of peace and learn to find positive energy within your life.

By engaging in active and empathic listening, I strive to fully understand the unique experiences of those I serve. I particularly enjoy working with the aging population, with a focus on group sessions. My training and experience have allowed me to help clients build self-esteem and confidence, while also maintaining healthy boundaries.

I advocate assertively for those whose voices have historically been marginalized or silenced, standing in solidarity with them to confront barriers and promote social justice. I am eager to assist you on your journey and provide a safe space to explore and process your life’s experiences. My goal is to help create a society where every individual can realize their potential without facing unjust obstacles, and where the richness of diverse experiences is celebrated as a source of collective strength.
